Freelance writer Brandi Calero-Holmes joined nDash in October. With 2 1/2 years of content experience under her belt, she’s bringing knowledge of the finance, business, and insurance industries to our platform. She recently chatted with us about work, clients, and important lessons learned:
nDash: Welcome to nDash, Brandi! Why don’t you introduce yourself?
Brandi Calero Holmes: I’m Brandi Calero-Holmes, a passionate freelancer from Newport News, Virginia. With an education in business and finance, my eagerness to learn as much as possible has led to me continuously building knowledge in those areas and many others. I’m quite the homebody, so most weekends involve me staying home doing extra work and practicing self-care.
nDash: What sets you apart from other writers?
Brandi: My career experience has been finance-related throughout. I started at a young age in the insurance world, becoming certified in Virginia and West Virginia at the age of 19 years old. From there, I gained experience in consumer lending by working for two national companies in that phase of my life. My most recent career experience has been spending 5 1/2 years in accounting for a multi-billion dollar company.
Over 2 1/2 years ago, I decided that working with words more than numbers was where my passion lies. Helping businesses grow by creating content their audiences will appreciate has given me a bigger purpose. My writing has been able to help businesses, professionals, and digital platforms internationally in such a short time.
nDash: What keeps you writing?
Brandi: What excites me about freelancing is never knowing what connection I’ll make next. It excites me that you never know what your next project might be and that it could be something that resonates with you. The subject areas I have found myself most passionate about would be business and finance. Both subjects are wide-scale but necessary to learn about for so many.
nDash: What advice do you have for those new to the industry?
Brandi: The best advice I can give new freelancers, especially those who became freelancers during the Great Resignation, would be that things will progress with time. You will learn techniques, tips, and tricks along the way, so don’t expect to be a six-figure copywriter or something as soon as you begin. What may make me a better writer might be the level of honesty I have with myself, my clients, and others. You have to know your limits as a writer and communicate that well. Always be realistic and know you won’t be able to yes to every opportunity or meet every accommodation.
nDash: What makes a great client?
Brandi: One that communicates their ideas well. Suggestions can be offered all the time if needed, but the more the client knows what they want, the more simple the creation process will be. Also, the best clients are prompt, and both sides respect each other’s time.
