We launched this platform to appeal to a very specific type of freelance writer. We wanted professional writers with demonstrated subject matter expertise who were eager to leverage their experience and creativity to find work that is more rewarding, consistent, and profitable. We’re happy to say that Geoffrey Craig falls squarely into this category. In the latest Writer Spotlight, we go back with Geoffrey on the marketing trends, freelancer perks, and other topics.
nDash: If you could only write about one topic for the rest of your freelancing life, what would it be? And why?
Geoffrey Craig: Change management. All of the amazing technology emerging right now will come and go, but the pace of change is the real challenge; it fascinates me how organizations attempt to create change and how they respond to the outcomes, good and bad.
Q: What’s the most rewarding part about being a freelance writer? The most challenging?
A: The most rewarding part of freelancing is completing a project, and the client responds by coming back for more. The most challenging part is remembering what I intended with a pitch if there’s a delay before it’s accepted. I found that the solution is writing a comprehensive outline as part of the proposal.
Q: What do your most successful clients all have in common?
A: In spite of the diversity of my clients, they share a need for writing that’s technical but concise and plainspoken.
Q: What made you decide to become a freelance writer?
A: I’ve always enjoyed the creative process. However, the deciding factor was the encouragement of one particular mentor.
Q: What’s the biggest mistake you see brands making with their content?
A: Being inconsistent in content production. Past success doesn’t matter; in digital, your audience expects a steady, predictable flow of content.
Q: What marketing trends should brands be keeping an eye on in 2017?
A: Mobile is now the leading source of contact with audiences, and voice search is here to stay. Brands should consider optimizing for voice search and be ready to adjust strategies. Change your tactics as you discover what drives this new audience angle. As a matter of principle, don’t be distracted by the platform; find your audience in the channels where it resides and draws it into your segmented email marketing list.
Rapid Fire:
- Favorite marketing buzzword? Experience
- Watched any terrible movies lately? Prometheus, so bad!
- The world record you are most likely to break is ____? Most obscure topic discoverer
- Are you cool with the Oxford comma? I appreciate anything that promotes clarity, brevity, and consistency in writing.
- What is a reasonable punishment for people who double-space after a sentence? Isn’t the shame punishment enough? I would tell them not to do it.
